Free Online Silence Remover
Remove silence, dead air and awkward gaps from any audio in seconds. See the waveform before and after, listen to both versions, then download. No signup and your files never leave your device.
How it works
- Upload: Drop one or many audio files. MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC work in most browsers.
- Tune: Pick a preset or set the threshold, minimum silence and edge padding yourself.
- Remove: One click cuts every silent gap that matches your settings, right in your browser.
- Download: Compare original and result, then save as WAV or MP3.
Features
- Before and after waveforms: Silent sections are highlighted in red on the original waveform, so you can see exactly what will be removed.
- Presets that make sense: Podcast, voice note, AI voice and lecture presets give you a good starting point in one tap.
- Private by design: Audio is decoded and processed locally with the Web Audio API. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Batch friendly: Add several files and process them together, then download each result separately.
- Clean exports: Download lossless WAV or a 128 kbps MP3 without watermarks or sign-up walls.
- Fast on phones too: The interface is built for touch screens, and processing speed depends only on your device.
What is a silence remover?
A silence remover is a tool that finds the quiet parts of an audio recording and deletes them. It is used to remove long pauses, dead air, breathing gaps and the silent stretches at the start and end of a file, so the same content plays in less time.
Editors have always done this by hand: zoom into the waveform, select the flat parts, delete, repeat. An automatic silence remover does the same job in seconds and gives you a starting point that you can listen to and adjust.
How silence detection works
SilenceZap splits your audio into 10 millisecond windows and measures how loud each one is. A window counts as silent when its level is below the threshold you choose. Neighbouring silent windows are joined into a gap, and only gaps longer than your minimum silence are removed.
Edge padding, which is 0 by default, can give back a few milliseconds on each side of every cut. Raise it if you want consonants and breaths kept intact.
Which settings should I use?
Every recording is different, but these starting points work well. Each preset in the tool applies them with one tap.
- Default: -45 dB threshold, 0.1 s minimum silence. A balanced first try for most clean audio.
- Podcast: -40 dB, 0.4 s. Removes long pauses and keeps short natural ones.
- Voice note: -42 dB, 0.25 s. Good for phone recordings and WhatsApp messages.
- AI voice / TTS: -50 dB, 0.15 s. Generated speech is very clean, so a low threshold is enough.
- Lecture: -38 dB, 0.5 s. Handles room noise and long thinking pauses in classes and talks.
Who uses a silence remover?
Podcasters use it to tighten episodes, YouTubers to clean narration before editing, teachers and students to shorten recorded lectures, and anyone who receives long voice messages to make them quicker to listen to. Creators who build videos from AI voices use it to remove the gaps that generated speech leaves between sentences.
Why browser-based processing matters
Many online audio tools upload your file to a server. SilenceZap does not. Your browser decodes the audio, the tool analyses and cuts it locally, and the result is created on your device. That makes it faster for large files, works without an account, and keeps private recordings private.
Frequently asked questions
What is a silence remover?
A silence remover scans an audio file, finds sections that are quieter than a chosen level for longer than a chosen time, and cuts them out. The result is a tighter recording with the same speech or music, minus the dead air.
What does the default -45 dB threshold mean?
Decibels below zero describe how quiet a sound is. At -45 dB the tool treats anything very quiet, such as room tone between sentences, as silence. Raise it toward -35 dB to cut more, or lower it toward -55 dB if your speech is soft.
Will it cut off the start or end of my words?
Edge padding is 0 by default for the tightest cut. If you hear a word clipped, raise edge padding to 20 to 40 ms or lower the threshold.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, detection, cutting and encoding all happen inside your browser tab. Closing the tab removes the data from memory.
Which formats can I upload and download?
You can upload any audio format your browser can decode, which usually includes MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC. Downloads are WAV (lossless) or MP3 (128 kbps).
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is supported by ads.
Is the spelling silence or silance?
The correct spelling is silence. People often search for silance remover or silence zap, and this page covers all of them.
